Kenya Africa

February 15 - 23, 2001

General comments: We hired a guide for the safari part of our trip. He was not a birding guide but rather a general guide that typically took people out to see the game animals. However, he was great because he knew most of the common birds but generally we worked together to identify new ones as they came along. We made a special request to get someone that knew at least a little about the birds. His name was Twanga and he was very excited to have some birders for a change as opposed to a group just wanting to see the game animals.

A typical day was to get up, have breakfast, maybe walk the grounds of the lodge we were staying at that day then move on to the next location. We were at the next location in time for lunch, then we could bird on the grounds, before going on a late afternoon game drive.

We landed in Nairobi late on Wednesday night and went straight to the hotel. Thursday morning I was up at dawn with binoculars in hand getting anxious to get a couple lifers from the hotel window. Our guide met us in the lobby and we were on our way to about a 3 hour drive to Amboseli National Park. The drive was a little frustrating in that you can see birds every where but you can't stop. Its better just to get to the parks and do your birding there. We got to our lodge in time for a late lunch then we did a game drive from about 4:00pm to 6:30pm. Amboseli is generally flat with grasslands and some bushy areas. There was also significant wetlands which provided shorebirds, ducks and kingfishers. There seemed to be birds everywhere. We got excellent views of Grey-crowned Crane as well as an introduction to the many grouse-like birds including Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, Yellow-necked Spurfowl and Helmeted Guineafowl. Once we arrived at one of the marsh areas the land seemed to come alive. There was movement everywhere as we saw Grey, Black-headed, Purple and the incredible Goliath Heron. Shorebirds included Black-winged Stilt, Pied Avocet, Stone Curlew, and six species of plover including Kittlitz’s, Three-banded, Blacksmith’s, Crowned, African Wattled and Spur-winged. Now that the trip is over I wish I could have spent an extra day here. The lodge - Amboseli Serena Lodge - was nice. The rooms were small but clean. We saw nightjars in the evening zipping through some lights just off the grounds but we could never get a good enough view to identify.

The next day we got an early start due to a long drive to Lake Navashia National Park. This is northwest of Nairobi. We stayed at the Lake Navashia Country Club. This looked like a country club with out the golf course. The grounds were nice and a fair amount of area to walk around on. There were trees, bushes and flowers so we were able to add a few birds here. In the afternoon we took a boat ride to Crescent Island and were able to walk around there for 2 hours. This island has no predators but some other animals. The birding was moderate at best. However, on the return boat ride we stuck near the shore and added several shorebirds including Common Redshank and several Ruff. The Grey-headed Gulls were very cool. I spent the remaining afternoon taking pictures of the various birds that were in the area.

The following day we had a short drive to Lake Nakuru. We were there well before lunch so we drove around and added a few more birds. The lake is known for its Flamingo population. It seemed Flamingos covered about 25% of the lake. Lesser Flamingos were the most popular but it was easy to find Greater Flamingos as they stood much higher. There were a couple of shorebirds but new ones were getting more difficult to add. There were also some wood lots and we added a few more birds from there. The Lodge grounds were small (maybe 20 acres) but there were a few more we added from there as well. We did our typical game drive around 4:00pm. Besides more neat birds like African Spoonbill and several raptors – Steppe Eagle, Brown Snake Eagle, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Black-chested Snake Eagle plus others – I got to see my first Oxpecker. Four Red-billed Oxpeckers were cleaning various parts of a Giraffe.

The next day was another long drive to the famous Masai Mari game preserve. Fortunately, we stayed two nights here so we were able to get to know the area and spend some time there. Here we stayed at the Mara Simba Lodge - very nice. The grounds were very good birding with maybe 100 acres to walk around. There was also a small river which attracted some additional birds. We had a late lunch and watched a variety of birds near the water. Of particular interest was a Black Crake slipping in and out of the grass along the bank. After lunch we walked the grounds. Since the temp was probably in the mid-90s I was doubtful of much activity but we scared up quite a bit. A pair of d’Arnaud’s Barbet was a decent sighting. We spent more time sorting out the various Weavers and concluded we had 6 different species.

That late afternoon we did our first game drive in the Masai Mara. The landscape is mostly savanna with sporadic bushes and an occasional tree. This appears very odd because there are literally miles in between single 80 foot trees. This provides an excellent perch for raptors and you could count on one in almost every tree. Our guide didn’t seem too interested in sorting out the various Cisticolas as they look pretty much the same and are relatively dull in appearance. Had we stopped for every bird that popped out of the weeds we wouldn’t have made it a mile. However, I made sure we stopped at the first 20-30 Wheatears as they were continuous in the dirt roads. We ended with four species including Northern, Pied, Abyssinian Black and Capped. The Northern Wheatear was by far the most common. I still hope to see a vagrant in Michigan some day and here I was seeing one every hundred yards.

After returning to the lodge we got ready for dinner. Dusk was settling in and the Marabou Storks started gathering in the largest of the nearby trees. It was fun to watch them jockey for position and eventually settle in as it became completely dark – truly a postcard scene with the last rays of sun setting behind the silhouettes.

The following day we did a game drive before breakfast and then another around 4:00pm. Each trip added more life birds and more chance to enjoy ones we already saw. We added another target bird – Secretary Bird as well as some other neat ones like Brown Parrot, African Green Pigeon, Crowned Hornbill and Jackson’s Widowbird. In between we walked the grounds and sat on the back deck and studied the raptors that soared high. There were also a variety of swallows and an occasional Little Bee-eater that would perch nearby.

The next day would be a long one but one I really looked forward to – we were headed to the western shores of the Indian Ocean – eastern Kenya. Clearly a new habitat with all new possibilities. The 3 hours back to Nairobi seemed to take forever. However, we made it to the airport and took off on schedule. After about 10 minutes in the air it was clear we were returning to Nairobi. The pilot came on and indicated one of his warning lights came on but there was nothing to fear. From the gestures of the lady in front of me, she wasn’t buying that for a minute. However, we landed, reboarded about 45 minutes later and arrived in Malindi without incident. To say the airport in Malindi is small might be giving it credit. It reminded me of something out of an Indian Jones movie. Regardless, it served its purpose. Our transportation to Hemingway’s was waiting and the cooler of ice cold sodas was very welcome. There would be little birding this day.

The next morning while "the Mrs" was getting ready I set up the scope from our balcony and scanned the beach for any non-human creatures. It was low tide and there was some movement but I was way too far away. On with the baseball cap, wrinkled t-shirt and shorts I informed my wife I would do "some scouting" for us while she was still getting ready. There wasn’t much in terms of volume but I quickly added Greater and Mongolian Plover, Common Sandpiper and Common Greenshank. What seemed remarkably absent were terns or gulls. It stayed this way for the three days we were there. I added African Skimmer on the last day. We scheduled a snorkeling trip for that afternoon hoping that, maybe if we got out there some distance, we could add more. We didn’t but at least the snorkeling was fun.

I arranged for a field trip to the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest the next day. I had read much about the forest and hoped to add at least one endemic – the endangered Clarke’s Weaver. This was an interesting 3 hour trip. A taxi driver met me in the lobby at 6:00am and we were at the forest headquarters about 15 minutes later. I met up with my guide – Alex. Our driver took us another 15 minutes into the forest, let us out, and proceeded to take a nap for the next hour and a half as Alex and I wandered the forest. What I found interesting is that I’ve read so much about poisonous snakes and various other critters and Alex was in flip-flops tromping on and off the trails as new birds were heard. Alex was extremely knowledgeable and could identify any song. Once heard, we usually had the bird in sight within a minute or so. We continued through the main trail checking off Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Klaas’ and Thick-billed Cuckoo, Bearded Woodpecker and four more species of sunbirds including Collared, Amani, Olive and Malachite. Before leaving I added Dark-backed, and yes, Clarke’s Weaver.

After finding our taxi driver we headed to a part of the Maldi River. This river rises and falls with the tide and I was fortunate that it was low tide. While only three more species were present, I added another target bird – Crab Plover in addition to Little Stint and Dimorphic Egret.

Since the area right by the hotel was not conducive to good birding we spent the rest of the day taking it easy and slowing down before our return home the next day. Total species for the trip – 250. All but 16 were life birds.

It wouldn’t be complete without adding some small commentary about things not bird related. We did manage to see many of the interesting mammals including Elephant, Lion, Jaguar, Rhino, Zebra, Giraffe Silver-backed Jackal, and various gazelles.

The people that worked in the lodges were very friendly and we felt safe at all times. However, once off the lodge grounds I was very happy we had a guide. We had to stop at the National Parks and Game Preserves to check-in. This is very different than the U.S. It was generally about a 10-15 minute process and while the guide was doing that, we were in the van swarmed with locals trying to sell us anything. I doubt we were ever close to danger but still an uncomfortable situation. Personally, I could not see doing this on our own. We noticed armed guards along the main roads maybe every 15-20 miles. The tourist vans were waived through but we often saw people by themselves pulled over. Rumor has it that these police often stop people and its simply a $10 handshake to get through.

While Nairobi has the hustle and bustle of a typical metropolitan it is very "third world" outside the city. I’m sure sanitary conditions don’t exist with the exception of the lodges and it amazes me to know these people somehow live off the land.
